The Tiko Council, flag bearer for the Clean City Contest in the South West Region, on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, received an inspection team from Yaounde as part of the ongoing assessment of participating councils.

The visit began with a brief working session at the conference hall of the council, attended by the Regional Delegate of Housing and Urban Development, the Mayor of Tiko Council HRH Dr. Peter Ikome Mesoso III, the 4th Deputy Mayor, the Secretary General, other council staff, and administrative authorities.

During the session, Mayor HRH Dr. Peter Ikome Mesoso III highlighted the council’s efforts in maintaining hygiene and sanitation despite the absence of basic services from HYSACAM, the national hygiene and sanitation company. He revealed that the council has largely relied on its own local resources, using a tractor and a tricycle to effectively manage waste and keep the municipality clean.

In a presentation, the Communal Development Officer, HRM Mbollo Ndedi Yves Patrice, outlined some of the achievements recorded in hygiene and sanitation. He noted that the council allocated 1.3 percent of its 2026 budget to hygiene and sanitation across the municipality. The council has also trained young people and sensitized residents on proper waste management practices to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.

Furthermore, the council has facilitated the production of pavement bricks made from recycled plastic waste, which have been used in paving roads and other public spaces within the municipality.

It was also revealed that between 2020 and 2026, the council planted more than 5,000 beautification trees across the municipality as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability, improve the appearance of public spaces, and contribute to a greener and healthier municipality.

According to the council, these initiatives demonstrate its commitment to finding locally-driven solutions to waste management and environmental sanitation.

The inspection team alongside Tiko Council Mayor and team visited the DO’s Office, Tiko Market, Tiko District Hospital, Tiko Motor park, GNS and GPS Mutengene, Public Toilets, Water birds, Gutters,waste transformation Sites, among others.

It should be noted that the 2026 National clean city contest will take place in Maroua, chief town of the Far North Region.
